The term 'resolver' refers to a service that links an identifier to an online source of information. Specifically, a GS1-Conformant resolver uses the GS1 Digital Link format to connect identifiers to various information sources about the identified item.

For example, it can link a product's Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) to a webpage detailing the usage instructions, sustainability details, comprehensive product specifications and installation instructions.

Adhering to the standard allows GS1-Conformant resolvers to be part of a resilient network without a single point of failure. This ensures that data about a product, asset, or location is maintained within the data owner's system, with the resolver network serving as a discovery mechanism.

Solution providers and brand owners are encouraged to operate or utilise resolvers according to their own business requirements. There is further information on GS1-Conformant Resolvers, as well as the standards themselves, on the GS1 Global Office website.
