Error correction levels

Error correction is an important feature that enhances the reliability and robustness of a QR code over a linear barcode.

A damaged QR code

QR error correction comes in four levels, each capable of withstanding a different maximum amount of damage. The four level are low, medium, quartile and high.

Users should tailor the QR code error correction level to suit their needs. For example, you might use the lowest level of error correction if the QR was going to be shown on a screen and would therefore not get damaged. Whereas, A QR with medium level error correction would typically suit a product in store.

Error correction examples

All the barcodes below contain the same data but with different levels of error correction.

A higher error correction level means a more complex QR code which, depedning on your packaging process, may be harder to print accurately on pack. Also, if there is a size constraint on the packaging, a smaller QR code with a higher error correction could mean less storage capacity.

Ensure you pick the level of eerror correction appropriate for your needs.
