More about UPCs

The Universal Product Code (UPC or UPC code) is a barcode symbol typically used for identifying and tracking trade items in American stores. Although lots of organisations refer to these numbers as a UPC, the correct name for these identifiers is GTIN-12. The name of the barcode symbol in which these numbers is most commonly encoded is the UPC-A barcode.

As GS1 is a global standard, both GTIN-12s and UPC-A barcodes work all around the world. The same is true of the GTIN-13s and EAN-13 barcodes issued by GS1 UK.

There is a common misconception that you need a UPC to sell your product in the US. This is not the case – your EAN-13s will work across the Atlantic.

Need a GTIN-12?

If for any reason you do require GTIN-12s, you can apply for them directly with GS1 US.
