Device Identification

The type of device is identified with a code known as a Device Identifier (DI). In GS1 standards, the role of the DI is fulfilled by the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN).

Production Identification

The dynamic information that identifies a medical device to a more granular level, such as a serial number, batch or lot number, or date (e.g., expiry date). Sometimes shortened to PI, these production identifiers are likely to change for every manufacturing batch.

When we look at these identification codes in relation to the regulations, they are known respectively as UDI-DI and UDI-PI.

You can learn more about GS1 standards and UDI on the GS1 Global Office website.
